Explore: Post’it War

Idea courtesy of Regretsy. At least some people will credit them for finding this stuff.

Post’it War is an amazing new Tumblr site dedicated to 8-Bit art made from post-it notes. Just look at what users are doing on any blank space they can find in France.

postitwar Explore: Postit War

Post’it War has very little written content on the site. What it comes down to is some people in France started posting post-it note art on any blank space they could find. They took photos and uploaded them to this site. That was a month ago. Now there are over a thousand images uploaded to the Tumblr and growing every day.

The concept, near as I can tell, is to “declare war” on your friends and neighbors. You find a way to tag a place they’ll be with post-it note art and they, in turn, do the same to you. It’s a fun form of graffiti that can’t possibly cause any lasting damage. If someone wants the piece down, they need only pull the post-it notes off the walls.

A person could get lost wandering through that gallery. I know I have. It’s for good reason. The site is non-threatening mostly-fan art done for public consumption. It’s genius. It’s like those LED throwies from Graffiti Research Lab, only not tossed up on the sides of bridges. It’s completely reversible graffiti and public art that can be changed out as often as a person is willing to invest the time to do it.

Visit: turntable.fm

Have you heard of turntable.fm yet? It’s an online music/chatroom hybrid where visitors can gather into rooms, play music, vote for or against it, and chat. It’s an interesting concept that an only get better with more users.

Here’s how it works. First, you need to be invited to the service or be Facebook friends with someone on the service. It’s annoying. turntable.fm is somewhere between beta and launch right now. It’s not that hard to get an invite (here you go) and all you need to log in is a Facebook account.

Second, you need to set your details. Unless you want to go from room to room with your real name as listed on your Facebook, you want to edit your profile to a nickname. Third, you need to enter a room. Fourth, you need to set up your queue.

There are two ways to load up your DJ queue–the list of songs you’ll play when you get onto an open turntable. You either search the ever-expanding music database of turntable.fm or you upload music from your computer. Either way, you want to have music ready to go. The service only lets you play the same song once every few hours. You can play the same artist up to three times in a few hours before your blocked from playing them again for a few hours. Chances are, you won’t want to.

The fun of turntable.fm is in the social interaction.

Masters of Horror #1: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road

Have you checked out my new blog project Remake the Blog yet? Now’s a great day to start out. This once a week (updated on Tuesdays) blog will use one medium (like visual art, music, creative writing, or photography) to grapple with another entertainment/art medium (like a television series, a symphony, a novel, or a ballet). It’s mixed media blogging.

The first subject to lead us straight through Halloween is the Masters of Horror TV series. I did an introductory post last week and just uploaded the first episode response. I think this side project will be a lot of fun. Feel free to chime on in with your own ideas, suggestions for future themes comments on the subject, criticism of the art, or your own media creations. I’ll be waiting.

A sample of what I’m talking about. The opening credits of Masters of Horror here:

turned into this. “Another Opening,” mixed media on bristol board.

Why I Regretsy

Regretsy has turned into one of the kindest, funniest, and most tight-knit communities every to begin with snark. Run by Helen Killer (aka professional voice actor April Winchell), Regretsy pokes fun at the strange world of Etsy. I know Etsy. I’ve had shops on Etsy on and off since it first opened. I have a shop right now for my family*. I’m no stranger to this bizarre world of DIY businesses.

Regretsy takes it a step further. They screengrab the listing, link back to the shop (to encourage someone to buy the strange/misspelled/inappropriate item), and write really dry and sarcastic commentary on the item. This site drives certain Etsy sellers up a wall, which just adds to more of the fun. If you think your work is above criticism, you’re in the wrong field. No one is perfect. Once you put work out there, you’re going to be judged. It’s far better to be targeted by a site that is just trying to get a laugh than a site that actively tries to deride, harass, and destroy lives.

Here’s how the site works. Either Helen or one of the regulars at the site finds a strange item, like pants made from discarded vintage afghans. They then screen-grab the listing and write commentary about why the item might be a little unusual. The army of 97000+ Facebook fans then sets to work trying to one up each other for the funniest comment connected to the post.

There’s a big heart behind the snark, though.

Fresh Ink Online is Offering Free Comics

Fresh Ink Online is G4TV.com’s weekly web series about what is happening in the world of comic books. Blair Butler takes you through the most notable new releases in her local comic shop. It’s a well-produced segment and Butler knows her stuff.

Check out last week’s video that includes the latest Walking Dead and G.I. Joe.

I have found so many interesting graphic novels and comic books to read because of this web series. Now G4TV is partnering with Graphicly, an computerized comic-viewing application, to make this search even easier.

This image came from the wonderful blog Hyperbole and a Half. Specifically, this post.

It’s rare that I come across a blog that consistently makes me laugh. Even the funniest writers have their off days and it can sometimes deflate their work. Such is not the case for Allie Brosh at Hyperbole and a Half.

What sets Allie apart from other humor blogs is her dedication to the content.
